The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) sets regulations for commercial buildings to help ensure people’s safety in the event of a fire. One key standard includes scheduling a fire door drop test. This test is done to determine that all sliding or rolling fire doors are fully functional and up to code.

What Happens During a Fire Door Drop Test?

If your business has never had to complete a fire door drop test before, here’s what you can expect during this process:

  • We’ll complete a thorough inspection. When performing a fire door drop test, we will conduct a thorough inspection for any rolling or sliding doors in the building to ensure they are working smoothly and reliably. We will also inspect the opening mechanism to determine if any repairs or adjustments need to be made.
  • We will activate the doors. Next, we will activate the rolling or sliding fire doors to perform the main part of the fire door drop test. This will allow us to test the speed at which they open and close. They need to shut quickly enough to cut off smoke or flames in the event of a fire. We will also write the necessary reports per MFPA requirements.
  • We’ll share our findings. Based on the results of the fire door drop test, we will recommend any necessary next steps. This might include ways to improve the fire safety of your doors and building with the necessary repairs and replacements or scheduling your next test. We can also perform any additional maintenance you may need for your rolling and sliding fire doors.
